Weight Loss: Take the Magic Pill

THE PROBLEM

Weight loss fat loss, getting thin, getting slim, getting skinny, whatever you want to call it, it has been elusive to and wanted by many. There is nothing new under the sun. Weight loss has always been the second law of thermodynamics which is in minus out equals accumulation. Here's the problem. How do you do it healthily? What do you eat? What part does exercise play in this? What about supplements?

DIET VS EXERCISE

It stands to reason if weight loss is calorie reduction then diet and exercise would both be a part of a healthy weight loss program. But if you could only choose one of hem, which one should it be? The answer is diet? Why? The answer is simple; you can't out exercise your diet! I'll give you an example. Let's say you had 2 pieces of pizza for dinner and a piece of cheesecake for desert. According to most internet sources there is 298 calories in a piece of pepperoni pizza and around 260 calories in a piece of cheesecake. Get a 10-pound backpack (water, your lunch, spare clothes), locate the steepest mountain in your vicinity, and walk up it. You'll burn about 860-900 calories an hour if you can keep the pace up to where you're slightly short of breath. If you don't have a mountain nearby, the stairwell of a hi-rise will do except it's boring and doesn't have a view like the mountain walk does. Would you now agree that you can't out exercise your diet. So if you could do only one, diet would be the choice.

WHAT ABOUT SUPPLEMENTS?

They must be just that "supplemental" and not primary. Good eating habits must be what starts you heading to a healthy weight. The most popular, practical and reasonable way to do this is to incorporate a meal plan based on "The Harvard Healthy Plate Diagram". This is a diagram in which your meal plate is divided into sections in 1/2 of your plate is vegetable matter, ¼ is carbohydrates, and ¼ is lean protein. Eating in this manner gives you the proper proportion of nutrients, and is a practical way to forgo the tedious calorie count for every meal. The role of supplements is to enhance or magnify the effect of the healthy meal plan. I liken to going out on a 90-degree day. You will be warm because the sun is hot. If you put a magnifying glass over your arm, the hairs on your arm will start to singe. Is the sun any warmer? No, it isn't. The magnifying glass just enhances the hot sun. Likewise the energy boosting pill and/meal replacement shake magnifies the weight loss caused by healthy eating.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN GOAL YOUR WEIGHT IS REACHED?

Once your goal weight is reach you MUST stick to your healthy meal plan. It becomes a matter of carbohydrate adjustment. If you see your weight to rise, you cut back on carbs. If it is harder to control you can add the supplements back in and you can keep some of the supplements in your house in case this happen but your primary tool for maintenance is the same thing that got you there; healthy eating.
