Staying Positive While Losing Weight

Today is the day. You're going to do it; you're going to see this thing through. You are going to lose weight. How? You are going to change bad eating habits. But, you need to stay positive about this whole process. Here are some positive pointers to help you be successful.

The word "bad" is so very negative so is the word "loss" or "lose." So you want to change to something more positive. The word "diet" is not very positive, i.e. it has the word "die" in it and we don't want that. So, what do we call our "thing" that we are doing to help get healthy and help us take the weight off and keep it off for good? Ah-ha! A weight control/positive eating strategy! That sounds good as it shows we are in control (weight control - we are in control of this and we won't let it control us) and positive eating also sounds good as it has the word "positive" in it. Then the word "strategy," it shows that we have a plan laid out to follow and follow it we must. Again, the working phrase is "weight control/positive eating strategy." Just how do we follow this positive strategy?

The first thing to do is to admit that you have a weight issue. Note, I did not say problem as that word is way too negative and we want to stay positive here. Okay, here it goes, "I have a weight issue." Awesome! That was easy, right? Now down to work.

The next thing is to figure out what needs to be cut out or cut down in your daily eating routine. Unhealthy snacks, sodas (even diet ones, note the word "die-t"), high calorie, high carbohydrate foods, sugary snacks, snacks with too much salt, and the biggie, just plain ole eating too much. Write this down. (My list looked like someone ate their weight in sugar and carbs - the pasta, the sweets, and the potatoes, ugh!) If you absolutely love bacon cheeseburgers, you should allow yourself to have one, not everyday and maybe not every other day, but once in a while when nothing else will do or even just cut it down to once per week. Remember, it's not rocket science; we are just adjusting our eating habits. If you love cake or cookies, you can have those, just not all day long, or everyday, and eat a smaller piece of cake and fewer cookies. One tip I found handy is to take about 3 cookies out of the bag, close the bag up, put it away, and walk away with only those 3 cookies rather than lugging the whole bag with you to the couch where you may be prompted to eat half the bag. We don't want to cut everything out as that would be too much of a shock to our body, so take it a little at a time and only one thing at a time. Then add in more fruits and vegetables that you like.

Move. Not literally move out of your home, but get up and move around. Don't just sit all the time. Do things that make you happy. I have a very sedentary job, but I try my very best to get up and walk around the block or do some quick leg exercises, anything to get my blood pumping and my body to burn off calories. If you live in an area where you do not feel safe walking around your block, then drive somewhere else and get out and walk somewhere you feel safe. If you have been very sedentary for a long time, please make sure to check with your doctor prior to starting out walking or exercising to make sure it's okay for you to do this.

Stay positive. Hey, if you mess up one day, don't let it get you down. Just say, "Yep, I messed up today, but you know what? I can start again tomorrow, so no biggie." Always keep a positive thought in your head and don't let others get you down and most importantly, don't allow yourself to get you down. You've made an important decision, and important change in your life and you can do this. Believe in yourself and make it happen.
