Calendar Honoring Classic Sitcoms, Great Gift for the TV Addict in Your Life

'Tis the season to start thinking about getting a new calendar, especially if your loved ones neglected to wrap you one to put under the Christmas tree. There are many unusual calendars out there, but some retirees have just completed one that will certainly be treasured by the TV sitcom fan in your life.

According to the state news of the December 17 issue of USA Today, the residents of the Royal Oaks Retirement Community created a "Classic TV Shows" calendar to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. The residents dressed up in costumes and makeup for pictures honoring old TV sitcoms like The Flintstones and Green Acres.

Another idea for a sitcom calendar would be to match each month to the show with which it is most associated. Here is what such a document might look like.

January, The Brady Bunch

This obvious choice for the first month is simply because of Eve Plumb's character, the middle daughter named Jan, who has a sibling rivalry with the elder "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia."

February, Room 222

A multiracial high school served as the setting for this late sixties show, which starred Karen Valentine as a mini-skirted student teacher.

March, Gomer Pyle USMC

A spinoff from The Andy Griffith Show centered on the antics of the well-meaning mechanic who left cousin Goober to march with Sergeant Carter and the United States Marines.

April, Too Close for Comfort

The fourth month of the year is not the name of either daughter on the seventies sitcom, but she is the niece of Henry (played by Ted Knight) who in season two came to live with the family.

May, The Beverly Hillbillies

Jed Clampett, who struck oil while hunting near his Appalachian shack before moving to California, had a beautiful daughter named Ellie May.

June, Petticoat Junction

After Bea Benederit left the series, the lady doctor moved into the Shady Rest motel. She was portrayed by veteran actress June Lockhart, whose credits also included Lost in Space and Lassie.

July, Love American Style

This short-lived series had a Fourth of July theme song, but it is most important for introducing the long-running sitcom Happy Days.

August, Gilligan's Island

The three hour tour, according to the date of Thurston Howell's Wall Street Journal, must have begun on August 17. Unfortunately, the Minnow was lost and the seven aboard were not rescued until well after the series had ended.

September, Married with Children

In a memorable episode called "We'll Follow the Sun" the Bundy clan decide to take a pleasant drive on Labor Day, only to find stagnant traffic, obnoxious fellow motorists, and engine trouble.

October, The Addams Family, The Munsters

These two kooky families have to be included on a calendar page where the only anticipated days come at the very end of the month.

November, WKRP in Cincinnati

Mr. Carlson had few ideas, thank goodness, but the one he concocted for Thanksgiving was his worst. He thought it would be a great promotion to drop turkeys from a plane and let them fly to safety.

December, Three's Company

Every sitcom has a Holidays episode or two, but only one has a Christmas and snow on every show for its entire first four seasons. The blond roommate's full name on the series is Christmas Snow.
